Voices unheard: The price of standing up

For this edition, yet again, our creative writing entries were amazing! We asked our fellow young writers to let their imagination run wild and take part in our “Unexpected beginnings” writing competition. The brief was to craft a captivating story, poem, or piece of creative writing but with a twist: The first sentence had to begin with “I didn’t mean to…” Here is our winner, Carly Bennet.

I didn’t mean to start a war. I only wanted the right thing. I think? Sometimes standing out and standing up for things can be the wrong thing to do.

Every day is a chance, every day is a choice. But sometimes the government can end up winning, so go and find your dance, go and find your voice, because the rumours are only just unfolding.

I am now claimed a criminal, a mistake. A problem in society. I didn’t even try to make an outrage. I was standing up for my feelings and what I thought was right. Everybody should have a chance to speak, shouldn’t they? But I’m just claimed “different” and “unsuitable” for raising my right choice.

Please note: All articles written by young people are fictional in nature and nothing is to be taken as fact.
