For this edition, yet again, our creative writing entries were amazing! We asked our fellow young writers to let their imagination run wild and take part in our “Unexpected beginnings” writing competition. The brief was to craft a captivating story, poem, or piece of creative writing but with a twist: The first sentence had to begin with “I didn’t mean to…
I didn’t mean to make that happen, it was just meant to be a harmless prank…
…3 HOURS EARLIER…
“Zaki, are you ready for school!” my mum shouted. “Yes Mum, just leaving now,” I sighed, this was the third time she’d asked me this morning. “Have a good day,” she said. “I won’t,” I replied back, with a smile on my face, I slammed the door shut behind me and began walking towards school. Along the way I was joined by my friend, Jamie. He was tall and lanky, and even though he didn’t look like it, he could pull a punch. Carefully I looked around making sure no one was there before quietly muttering to him, asking if he had brought it. He nodded and turned to face the pavement ahead of us again.
When we reached the green gates, beckoning us into the school, we went our separate ways, knowing we would see each other again in English, first period. Form time was slow, almost like time had been changed but I knew the wait would be worth it. English finally arrived and I took my seat next to Jamie. Mr Coll, our teacher, walked in, with no emotion on his face, like always. Jamie reached into his pocket, but I stopped him, “Not yet,” “I whispered. We waited thirty minutes until we finally saw our chance. The girl next to us took off her blazer, and without her noticing I grabbed it. Jamie pulled the matches out and struck one, carefully he placed it on the blazer, flames erupted around, engulfing the material, I reached for the extinguisher in my bag, however it wasn’t there. “Oh no!” I shouted; I’d forgotten it.
Suddenly the flames leapt to the carpet, and everything happened so quickly. The room lit up and the fire alarm echoed throughout the school. Everyone rushed towards the door struggling to get out. Just then, I heard a piercing scream from behind me. I whipped my head around and saw Mr Coll laying there on the ground wrapped in flames.
“What have I done?”…
