For this edition, yet again, our creative writing entries were amazing! We asked our fellow young writers to let their imagination run wild and take part in our “Unexpected beginnings” writing competition. The brief was to craft a captivating story, poem, or piece of creative writing but with a twist: The first sentence had to begin with “I didn’t mean to…
I didn’t mean to sabotage my best friend’s job interview. I just needed a job at the World Trade Center to take care of my family. She told me last night she was planning for a job there. Me too. I applied for the job as assistant manager, but weirdly, she also signed up for the part.
“Alena, please could you apply for a different job? You know how badly I need this for my family, and you are already stable.” She looked at me with a careless look on her face.
“Karley, I know you’re struggling, but I need two jobs to be rich, and my job as office manager is boring.”
“TWO JOBS. SERIOUSLY ALENA. I HAVEN’T EVEN GOT A JOB.”
Alena had a smug look on her face.
I walked off with a sigh. I wondered why I was even friends with her. But then I got an idea. A very horrible idea, but I needed this.
When I arrived at my flat, I got my keys out but saw a 3 day eviction notice. Shoot, I needed this job fast. I got onto my computer, and wrote an email the manager of the World Trade Center: Frank De Martini.
“Dear Frank De Martini,
I am currently applying for a job as assistant manager at the World Trade Center, but I have noticed my ex best friend who bullied me and others and called us poor, is applying too. She knows I’m also applying, and started to make fun of me saying, “You are poor, and you live in a flat.” To make matters worse, I also have an evacuation notice.” That part is real.
“The other applicant is called Alena Rose, well known for bullying and teasing. I understand if you still want her to apply, but please understand, sir, I need this job.”
Sent. God, I’m a terrible human being, but…she does deserve this for being a horrible human being right?
It has been a week now, and I went to check my emails.
“Hello, there have been two applicants, so I’m guessing you’re Mrs Karley Lake. To let you know, we have a strong anti-bullying policy, so we have decided to disregard the other applicant. Please send a CV so we know you are capable of the job. You can attach it below.
Best of luck,
Frank De Martini.”
I quickly sent my CV, and got another email.
“Dear Karley Lake, we are pleased to say you have got the job. It starts tomorrow, on September 11th.
Congratulations,
Frank De Martini.”
I got the JOB. WOW.
I blocked Alena’s phone number, and began to start a new life.
I walked over to the World Trade Center, and sat in my office. By lunchtime I felt shaky, and decided to look at the horizon.
Hang on a second, that’s a… A plane? Headed our way?
