Yesterday evening, the Euros got underway, starting with Iceland vs Finland at 5pm! Held in Switzerland, this is expected to be the most watched women’s European championships ever! As it all kicks off, I wanted to convey my thoughts.
Who do I think will lift the trophy?
Either England, Spain or Germany. I do think England can go all the way, if we can get through our group of death, but the favourites are undoubtedly Spain. Despite missing out on a medal at the Olympics, the World Champions are on hot form. A big question mark is if Aitana Bonmati, Ballon D’Or winner, can recover from her stay in hospital with Meningitis. England have beaten Spain recently, but we must be at our best. We also cannot forget about Germany, eight-time European Champions, who have been exceptional recently.
Who are my dark horses?
First, the hosts, Switzerland. Although they are missing key talisman Bachmann, Switzerland will have the boost of being the home team and with a favourable group, I do fancy them to go far. Secondly, Sweden- a team with so many talented players, including Rolfo, Rytting Kaneryd, Blackstenius, Ilestedt and Eriksson should not be ignored.
Who should we be watching?
Spain: Aitana Bonmati, Alexia Putellas, Claudia Pina, Ona Batlle.
England: Leah Williamson, Beth Mead, Lauren James, Alessia Russo, Jess Carter, Lucy Bronze (I could name the whole team!)
Germany: Lea Schuller, Giulia Gwinn, Sjoeke Nusken, Klara Buhl
Poland: Ewa Pajor
Denmark: Pernille Harder, Josefine Hasbo
Sweden: Magdalena Eriksson, Stina Blackstenius, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd
Netherlands: Vivianne Miedema, Daphne van Domselaar, Lineth Beerensteyn, Esmee Brugts
France: Selma Bacha, Sandi Toletti, Sandy Baltimore, Kadidiatou Diani
My final predictions:
CHAMPIONS: Spain
FINALISTS: Germany
SEMI-FINALISTS: England and Switzerland
